Location: Along Tanglin/Orchard
Road
What Is There Today?
Other than being a great shopping street, Orchard Road
is also where many Singaporeans and visitors hang out,
meet friends and people-watch. Always bustling with people,
buskers and street cafes, the 2.4km long pedestrian mall
along Orchard Road is possibly Singapore's longest and
most happening public space.
The grand tropical boulevard, lined with lush Angsana
trees is flanked by shopping malls, and sprinkled with
public spaces and artwork along the mall. Well-connected
to the major departmental stores, public open spaces
and MRT stations, it is the most identifiable street
in Singapore, and the choice venue for street events.
Many outdoor cafes and kiosks line the mall.
Did You Know?
Did you know that a drainage canal runs beneath the
pedestrian mall along Orchard Road, in front of buildings
like Wisma Atria and Ngee Ann City? Stamford Canal,
which stretches all the way from Tanglin Road to Dhoby
Ghaut, City Hall and Marina Bay, was decked over in
phases starting from 1973 and subsequently developed
into the wide, shady boulevard lined with mature Angsana
trees that has come to be identified with Singapore's
premier shopping street.
