What Is There Today?
After the clean-up of Singapore River in 1987, URA worked together with other public agencies to transform the river from a working waterway to an attractive waterfront for housing, recreation and entertainment.
The tree-lined promenade along both banks of the river was completed in 1999 through public and private sectors efforts. Pedestrians can now stroll along the entire stretch of the river comfortably from Boat Quay, Clarke Quay to Robertson Quay, making a loop of 6km.
Three new footbridges ( Alkaff Bridge , Robertson Bridge and Jiak Kim Bridge ) were also built at Robertson Quay to improve the connectivity between the two banks.
Did You Know?
You can explore the Singapore River on a river taxi. The river was dredged so that river taxis could go all the way upstream to Robertson Quay.
When URA carried out the improvement works, the original profile of the river banks were kept. The river-wall profiles of the three quays are distinctly different: Robertson Quay is characterised by embankment river wall; Clarke Quay and the lower stretch of Robertson Quay is characterised by vertical walls while river steps are distinct features along the upper stretch of Clarke Quay and Boat Quay.
