INTRODUCTION

Where is your favourite place in the city centre? Think of a regular meeting spot where you have a cup of coffee with friends, or a place you enjoy a leisurely stroll; where you spend peaceful moments reading under the shade, or just relax by a fountain and watch the world go by.

Public spaces, akin to a city's living room, are where people meet and interact. Well-designed and successful public spaces draw people to them and become focal points and urban landmarks in the city. They add value to surrounding developments, as well as delight and inspire city dwellers, and contribute to the enjoyment and promotion of urban life.

There are different types of public spaces: an urban plaza, a quiet park, a street, a pedestrian mall, a landscaped forecourt of a distinctive building, or even a covered atrium within a building. Besides public parks and civic spaces, many public spaces are provided by private developers within their buildings for public enjoyment.

The aim of this web page is to feature some of the existing public spaces, and to generate public awareness of the public realm in our city. You are welcome to share your insights on the public spaces. Tell us why you think a public space works and is attractive to you. By sharing such observations, we hope to increase the understanding of what contribute to successful public spaces.
